ANZAC Day 2021

Welcome to ANZAC Day

On the 25th of April 1915, the ANZAC troops, Australian and New Zealand soldiers formed part of the allied expedition that set out to capture the Gallipoli peninsula.  The objective was to capture Constantinople (now Istanbul in Turkey), the capital of the Ottoman Empire, and an ally of Germany. These became known as Anzacs and the pride they took in that name continues to this day.

The ANZAC troops landed on Gallipoli and met fierce resistance from the Turkish defenders. Their plan to knock Turkey out of the war quickly became a stalemate, and the campaign dragged on for eight months.

At the end of 1915, the allied forces were evacuated. Both sides suffered heavy casualties and endured great hardships. Over 8,000 Australian soldiers were killed. On this day all Australians now remember the sacrifice of those who have died in all wars. We remember their courage, even in a failed military campaign, and we recall the sacrifice our troops have made through the decades to preserve our lives and our values.

Sadly, in 2021, we are destroying many of the values these men fought and died for by acts of parliament. ANZAC troops.

They called the First World War the war to end all wars, but little did they know that only 21 years later the world would be plunged into an even bigger and deadlier war against more evil and tyrannical foes. The fact is, we will never know peace in this world because, as Jeremiah noted

Jeremiah 17:9 (ESV Strong’s)

The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?

We can look back with pride and thankfulness for what our soldiers have done through the years. Our troops were the first to liberate Palestine from centuries of Muslim control on December 17th 1917, and over the years we have fought in Europe, the middle east, Asia and the Pacific. My grandfather was killed on Timor in Indonesia, and is buried on Anbon.

Their bravery across many battlefields is remembered this day, and if I were to choose one battle to illustrate the courage of Australian troops it would probably be the charge of Beersheba by the light horsemen, some of whom came from Woombye.

BEERSHEBA and the ANZAC troops

Centuries of crusades, generals and empires had failed to capture Jerusalem, and after several repelled British invasions they realised that the only way to Jerusalem was by opening the road through Beersheba.

By the time the Australian Light Horse arrived on the scene, the situation was dire. Several attacks on the city had failed. The light horsemen were low on water, and they knew that they must either take the heavily fortified town of Beersheba, or face a 14 hour trek back to their lines to get precious water.

So on the 31st of October 1917, a bunch of crazy, young Aussies stood poised to mount a suicidal frontal attack against overwhelming odds, which was destined to become the last great Calvary charge in history!

800 young Aussies from the Light Horse lined up on their horses for a suicidal charge at the 4,500 Turkish entrenched in their fortified positions, some 6 km away in the town of Beersheba. Outnumbered nearly 6 to 1, and without artillery support, the first wave started at a trot, then opened to a gallop, as the Turks lobbed shells into their lines, killing many. But these young Aussies didn’t flinch in the face of attack, they opened up into a full gallop, emu plumes flying from their slouch hats.

The Turks began to panic, and in their panic found they could not lower the sights of their guns fast enough to target the oncoming Aussies, so the shells exploded harmlessly over their heads and behind them. The light horsemen screamed and charged on faster and faster as the Turkish machine guns were brought to bear. But again the charge was so bold and so fast and intense, the machine gunners in their panic could not lower their sights sufficiently also, so the bullets flew over the horsemen’s heads.

They hit the front trench and leapt it at a single bound, then did the same for the reserve trench and on into the streets of Beersheba, and by sundown the town was theirs! All of the 19 wells of the town had been mined and a German officer was starting to blow them. If he succeeded both the Australians and the entire town would die of thirst.  As the Lord smiled on our troops that day, he was able to only blow up 2, and 17 were preserved.

In typical Aussie fashion, one trooper was asked why he kept charging so fiercely towards Beersheba. He replied, “Beersheba… Some joker knocked off the second half of the sign… I thought we were charging towards beer!”

What 11 Crusades, the genius of Napoleon and the might of the British army had failed to do, 800 fresh faced Australian Light Horsemen ANZAC had achieved, and the way was open to finally set Jerusalem free from Muslim domination. God used the smallest and youngest nation on earth at the time to set the city of David free, which they did on December 17, 1917.

Our boys stood in the face of overwhelming opposition and were used of God to change the course of world history! And of course, much of the 2nd light horse regiment was drawn from this very area… Woombye!

Australia has never actually been invaded by an enemy, but right now I believe our nation is under attack, from within. Many of the values our forefathers fought and died for are being destroyed by a political socialist agenda and a biased media right here as a 5th column within our own society.

Never before have we seen such a concerted, insidious attack, that is targeting the very moral fabric of our nation. Make no mistake, what we see today is not tolerance and it’s not political change, it is an invasion by an evil enemy seeking to destroy and decimate our culture and dominate our children!

Proverbs 14:34 (ESV Strong’s)

Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people.

While I am proud today to be an Australian for what our forefathers did, I am ashamed to be an Australian for what our politicians and media are doing!

In the face of such rampant evil, in the growing tide of darkness, we face a choice like those 800 young men faced that day. Do we turn and run, do we meekly shut our mouths and champion so called tolerance, or do we stand and fight for what’s right!

Our society is being plunged into a level of darkness beyond anything we have experienced in our lifetimes, but we are called to be salt and light to this wayward world.

John 3:19-21 (ESV)

And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil. For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed. But whoever does what is true comes to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that his works have been carried out in God.”

Those 800 light horsemen could have turned back, they could have said its all too hard, they could have taken the easy way out. But they decided to take a chance, to make a stand, to mount a suicidal charge into the teeth of the Turkish guns, believing God was with them… and He was!

If we choose to fight, and pray, and believe for our nation, we do not stand alone, for our God stands with us, and the one who is in us is greater than the one who is in the world!

And fight we must, not just for the Lord, not just for our churches and our way of life,  not just for what is right or wrong, we must fight for our children, for future generations that face destruction because or our complacency!

This coming year you and I face a choice… to quietly tow society’s party line, to slink off and avoid criticism from our friends, or to stand and fight for what we believe in.

2 Corinthians 10:4-5 (ESV Strong’s)

For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds. We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ,

We need to do this, church. We must mount up, face those spiritual guns, and together stand and fight against every thought that is contrary to the Word of God.

And they will attack. They will use every means at their disposal… Insults, mockery, accusations of hate speech and now even threats. But we can use divine weapons, the weapons with which God says we can win. We fight with weapons like prayer and faith and unity, love in the face of persecution, the truth in the face of lies, and choosing to honour and respect those who hate us, even when they continue to hate.  The 800 light horsemen fought with horse and gun and bayonet, but we fight with truth, and love and prayer.

So in this coming battle, do not be surprised at the venom of the attack, even from fellow Christians. Jesus said,

John 15:18 (ESV Strong’s)

“If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you.

Those who love compromise won’t love us. But I for one am prepared to stand and fight for what I believe in, to fight for what is right, anywhere, any time!  But listen, we cannot win our nation by hating them more than they hate us…. Ours is the way of the Saviour, the way of truth in the face of bigotry, joy in the face of fear and above all love in the face of persecution. Our chief weapon is not prejudice but prayer.

1 Timothy 6:12 (ESV)

Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called and about which you made the good confession in the presence of many witnesses.

Let me share some of the battlefronts where we engage this evil enemy.

1.       MORALITY

Morality is clearly a primary battlefront. The moral corruption and degradation in our society has certainly been ramped up, and the enemy feels he is winning.

Romans 1:28-32 (ESV Strong’s)

And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a debased mind to do what ought not to be done. They were filled with all manner of unrighteousness, evil, covetousness, malice. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, maliciousness (etc.). …foolish, faithless, heartless, ruthless. Though they know God’s righteous decree that those who practice such things deserve to die, they not only do them but give approval to those who practice them.

That’s what we are seeing… even those not practicing these behaviours give their approval of them! The rise of militant gay and lesbian action started with a plebiscite, but their agenda is far greater. Now, with the Blessing of media and government,  Transgenderism is openly and heavily promoted in schools and colleges, while abortion up until birth in now law in this state. It’s not advance Australia fair but advance Australia wherever vocal minorities want, and we are advancing into a moral void that spells disaster for this generation.

But step back and look at the gay and lesbian lobby… They don’t even know who they are. LGBTQIA+, they add more letters to this alphabet soup constantly. And, they refuse to be consistent, so a 6 ‘4” muscle bound transgender woman is forbidden from playing women’s football because he/she is injuring others.

Make no mistake… the lines are drawn, the battle is on and to the guns of these lobby groups are aimed squarely at us… Christians are the enemy. Muslim leaders whose countries preach death to homosexuals are welcomed by politicians, but footballers who post an opinion on Instagram are sacked and viciously attacked. Other footballers are not fired for domestic abuse, gang raping girls or drunken rampages, but one is fired for having an opinion! It’s an utter disgrace!

2.       MINDS

The second battlefield is in the minds of Australians. And the enemy is not targeting the old, the devil is targeting the minds of the young, using schools, social media and peer pressure. In the minds of Australians, especially young Australians, the Church represents old fashioned, antiquated, prejudicial and offensive morality, preventing people from exercising the right to express their true selves.

I cannot remember a time in history where people’s minds are so easily offended. For all of our intelligence and scientific minds, we are currently so fragile and easily offended. Look at the explosions, accusations and rants on social media. Not only do people’s opinions change every 5 minutes, but they will defend said opinions to the death, even if it doesn’t affect them!

But remember our fight is not against these people we differ with, it is against the spirit of the age behind it.

Ephesians 6:12 (ESV)

For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.

Any wonder mental health issues are at an all time high, COVID or no COVID, the enemy is fighting for the minds of Australians this ANZAC Day.

3.       ME-ISM

This could be the most selfish, self absorbed generation in history. This is the age of the selfie, and never before have so many photos been taken of so many people doing so little!

2 Timothy 3:1-4 (ESV Strong’s)

But understand this, that in the last days there will come times of difficulty. For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not loving good, treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God,

Why do we have family breakdowns? Why do we have abuse? Why do we have broken lives? Because at the heart of it, people are selfish. They want what they want over and above anyone else. And what’s more, they believe their opinion is superior to anyone else’s, so they fight and claw to destroy anyone whose opinion is different. Lovers of self won’t change the world, only lovers of God will this ANZAC Day.

4.       MONEY

The enemy controls most of the money, but the greater evil is not the government or rich people agenda but the spirit behind money. They seek to tie us up in knots and personal debt, and thwart our giving to the Kingdom.

1 Timothy 6:10 (ESV Strong’s)

For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs.

Money is not evil, but the spirit behind it, the love of money is a constant source of evil in not only our lives, but in and throughout our society. The enemy fights hard this ANZAC Day!

5.       MEDIA

A great strategic battlefield where the enemy is triumphing right now is the media.  While social media has become a cesspool of human emotions, opinions and aggressive attacks on anyone who differs in any way on any subject, especially morality, main stream media is totally dominated by evil agenda and anti Christian sentiment.  This should not surprise us…

2 Timothy 3:12-13 (ESV Strong’s)

Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted, while evil people and impostors will go on from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived.

Today in Australia the media is seemingly all powerful, but make no mistake, this is a battle of attrition and they are out to dull our conscience and wear us down.

Don’t you wonder why according to statistics <3% of America is homosexual, yet 100% of American TV shows feature at least one homosexual, always in a positive way. Yet according to a 2017 Gallop survey, 71.2% identify as Christian, Catholic and Protestant, but they rarely if ever appear in TV shows, and almost always are portrayed as negative, legalistic and stupid.

In movies, TV, music, social media and print, Christians are the most persecuted group, and even though the enemy is winning on this battlefield, he ain’t letting up any time soon. Listen, a setback is just a set up for a come back, and I believe it’s time we started fighting back!

Let me finish this call to spiritual arms on ANZAC Day by paraphrasing a speech given by Winston Churchill on June 4th 1940.

Even though large tracts of our world have fallen into the grip of the devil, we shall not flag or fail, we shall go on to the end. We shall fight them on the beaches, we shall fight them in the hills. We shall defend our island, whatever the cost.

We shall fight them in the media, we shall fight them in schools and in homes, we shall fight them in churches and elections, and most of all we shall fight in prayer closets. We shall never surrender. And when our leader returns one day soon, I hope that He will look at this generation and say, this was their finest hour!

Our fight starts in our hearts this ANZAC Day, by setting our hearts and minds on things above

Colossians 3:2 (ESV)

Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth.

Today, ANZAC Day 2021, I am sounding and alarm to the people of God, I am calling you to stand and fight as our forefathers did, for what we believe in. To turn and face the guns of the enemy, to charge into the breech, to stand firm and to never give up.

Ephesians 6:10-13 (ESV)

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm.

Will you join me this morning to stand firm for Jesus in our society this ANZAC Day. This is not intolerance or hate speech, this is about honouring God’s Word and our peoples souls. I’m not calling you to hate, I’m calling you to love.  I’m not calling you to fear, I’m calling you to fight. I’m not calling you to persecute, I’m calling you to pray. Join me now and let’s pray for our nation. We fight on our knees on ANZAC Day!
